Did you know the first celebrated Labor Day holiday was on September 5, 1882 in New York City? It has been over a hundred years since and it is still unclear to who is the first to introduce the holiday for workers.
Some people will debate to whom is the establisher of this holiday. The controversy is between two men by the names of Peter McGuire and Matthew Maguire. Peter McGuire was a secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. He was the cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Matthew Magiure was a machinist and during the time of planning of the holiday he worked as secretary for the Central Labor Union. There are no official records to support any claims to who was the originator. It is my belief, no matter who founded the holiday, the reasons is what’s important. Labor Day was used by workers gave them an opportunity to express their concerns and discuss strategies for better working conditions and salaries. And of course to celebrate all of their accomplishments by family picnics, parades, and other community festivities. The labor force has come a long way and I am thankful for all the people past and present who endure and persist. Today I have the freedom of choice because of them and because of them my children are not laborers.
Enjoy the day!
